Field of Dreams is an arm of Down Syndrome Cork focusing on supporting adults with Down’s syndrome in the Cork region. We know that adults with Down’s syndrome can and do live fulfilling lives but they can also meet with obstacles. We know that 95% of adults with Down syndrome are unemployed. We believe that this need not be the case. In a horticultural setting in Curraheen, Cork, we offer training and supports for adults. With thanks to so many supporters, we have been operating on a pilot basis since September 2017 with plans to expand in 2018.
The Field is truly a magical place where dreams are already coming true. In the six months since we opened, the Field of Dreams has grow to be a vibrant training hub. 8 adults with Down’s syndrome are mid-way through a Life & Work Skills Programme. They are working with 2 tutors from the Cork Educational Training Board and the Field manager, Debbie. For some, the focus is on developing horticultural, catering, hospitality and admin skills with the ultimate aim of gaining qualifications and accessing employment. For others, those on the Activation Programme, the focus is on socialising and fun. The Field of Dreams is never short on fun.
A key role is currently being established – that of Employment Support Officer, a role CRITICAL to supporting adults with Down’s syndrome in successfully accessing and sustaining work. The Employment Support Officer will act as a bridge between those adults with Down syndrome who seek work and potential employers, with a brief to support both equally.
2018 promises to be another challenging year for Down Syndrome Cork. Our aim in the Field of Dreams is to double the number of placements on the Life & Work Skills Programme in September. We hope to continue with the Activation Programme which currently takes place 1 day per week. We plan to open the cafe on a trial basis, and we are looking to significantly develop the horticultural elements of the site. You better believe it, its gearing up to be another busy year ahead.
